Blanket Cylinder Tension Slurring Prevention

What are the most important technical considerations for maintaining proper tension on the Blanket Cylinder and preventing image slurring at high print speeds?

Maintaining the correct and uniform tension across the Blanket Cylinder is paramount, particularly at high print speeds where dynamic forces are magnified. If the blanket tension is insufficient, the blanket may slip, ripple, or shift slightly during contact with the Plate Cylinder or the substrate. This small movement results in slurring—a common defect where the printed dots appear elongated or smeared in the direction of the print, causing a loss of image sharpness.

Technical operators must regularly check tension gauges and ensure that the blanket is uniformly tightened according to the manufacturer's specifications. Modern printing units often feature automatic or semi-automatic tensioning systems to compensate for the slight stretching that the rubber material undergoes after initial installation.
