Common mistakes in Work and Turn imposition

What are the most critical technical risks associated with horizontal sheet flipping in a Work and Turn workflow?

The most critical technical risk in a Work and Turn workflow is poor front-to-back Registration caused by inconsistent paper dimensions. Because the sheet is flipped horizontally, the press relies on the opposite side guide for the second pass. If the paper has not been "squared" (trimmed perfectly on all four sides) before printing, the images on the back will not line up with the front. This makes it impossible to achieve a clean final trim or accurate folding.

Another risk is neglecting the Grain Direction. If the paper grain is perpendicular to the final fold after the turn, the paper fibers may crack, ruining the appearance of the product. Additionally, prepress teams must ensure the center gutter is exactly double the required margin to allow for a clean split after printing. By strictly controlling paper preparation and using precise Imposition software, these risks can be eliminated, allowing the facility to reap the full economic benefits of the "turn" method without sacrificing quality.
