Critical Scoring Errors: Grain Direction and Pressure

What are the two common errors when performing the Scoring process and how can board breakage be prevented?

Two critical errors often encountered in the scoring process are the misalignment of the score lines against the board's Grain Direction and the incorrect calibration of pressure depth. When score lines are executed perpendicular to the grain, the risk of material fracture, cracking, and surface damage is significantly heightened, even when using controlled scoring pressure. This type of fracture not only negatively affects the final product's visual appeal but also drastically compromises the package's structural integrity.

To prevent such errors and ensure faultless folding, production supervisors must perform preliminary Score Bend tests to calibrate the optimal pressure for each specific board type. The pressure applied must be precisely matched to the material thickness: insufficient pressure leads to an uneven and messy fold, while excessive pressure risks accidental cutting or over-weakening of the scored area, which could potentially cause the complete tearing or failure of the finished packaging during assembly or transit.
