Fold Line vs. Creasing: Understanding Rule Thickness

What is the difference between Fold Line and Creasing, and how is the actual Creasing Rule thickness determined?

The Fold Line is the graphic name in the Dieline file that indicates the folding point. In contrast, Creasing is the industrial process that enables the fold through controlled physical pressure applied by creasing rules. In other words, every Creasing operation facilitates a Fold Line in the final product.

The designer usually specifies fold lines in the file with a 0.5-point graphic thickness, but the actual Creasing Rule thickness is determined by the material (paper or board) thickness and can range from 2 to 6 points (approx. 0.7 to 2.1 mm). This selection is made by the die-maker based on necessity to prevent cracking of the print and material.
