Gradient Banding: Prevention in Packaging Print

What is the Banding phenomenon in Gradients, and how can it be prevented using Prepress tools?

Banding refers to the appearance of unwanted, abrupt lines instead of a smooth color transition in Gradients. This occurs when Halftones are improperly managed, and the printing press fails to continuously reproduce the color shift. This defect severely diminishes the visual quality of the packaging.

To prevent Banding, the designer must use professional software like Photoshop during the Prepress stage to add slight Noise or Dithering to the gradient. This technique helps smooth the transition between halftones, eliminating the need for complex gradient management by the print shop's RIP and preserving Color Consistency.
