Key advantages of FM Screening compared to AM Screening

What are the key pros and cons of FM Screening and its application in packaging print?

FM Screening provides extremely high image quality and visual detail by changing the density (frequency) of fixed dots instead of changing their size. Its greatest advantage is the complete elimination of the regular screen structure, which automatically removes issues like Moire and screen angle interference found in AM Screening. This makes it ideal for complex jobs, smooth gradients, and images with intricate textures (such as nature photos).

However, FM is more sensitive than AM Screening during the printing process. The sensitivity of the microscopic dots (typically 10 to 40 μm) to the smallest fluctuations in press pressure and environment requires highly precise RIP calibration and Dot Gain Compensation. To increase stability in challenging press environments, hybrid versions like XM Screening can be utilized. Success with FM requires high technical expertise and stringent quality control.
