The concept of Resolution in printing and its difference

Resolution in printing, what exactly does it mean, and how does it differ from key terms such as PPI, LPI, and DPI?

Resolution is a comprehensive concept that defines the ability to distinguish fine details at any point in the production process (from the camera to the final output). This concept itself includes several subsets that are often confused. PPI (Pixels Per Inch) defines the resolution of the digital image or input in software, and is set by graphic designers.

In contrast, LPI (Lines Per Inch) indicates the halftone or screen frequency resolution in the printed output and relates directly to the substrate, and DPI (Dots Per Inch) specifies the physical resolution of the output device, such as a platesetter or printer. Understanding these distinctions is essential for ensuring output quality and preventing time wastage in the Lithography process.
